“Experience suggests that education and information on environmental issues—from social media campaigns to government programs—does not necessarily foster true behaviour change. Awareness alone is not enough. Engagement is key. Cooler Solution’s “Design for Change” challenge is to develop useful strategies to help designers and consumers bridge the gap between intention and action. Our mandate is to understand how to motivate real and meaningful behaviour change amongst consumers to be more socially and environmentally responsible.”

I AM the movie
This documentary sounds pretty interesting and related to a lot about what we’re doing at the Stir Symposium - that we are really hardwired to work together, not apart. A few auotes from the trailer that I’m looking forward to hearing more about:
“What’s wrong with our world, and what can we do about it?”
“The basis of nature is cooperation and democracy - it’s in our DNA.”
I think this is playing at the Drexel in Columbus on April 29th. Not sure what time - it’s not posted on their website yet.
We are planning a Symposium for next Fall that I think everyone would be really excited to attend and be a part of if you’re interested in collaboration — and big-picture ideas! It’s going to be super cool and we’re really excited about it.
Interesting article on what Designers are going to be dealing with in a world with increasing uncertainty.
“…designers are coming to grips with how to help users create local resilience and self-reliance. In fact, the concept of resilience has become an important term that designers are just now grappling with.”
Well, how do ya like that:
“The above project has been determined to be exempt under categories 1 & 2; the project number is XXXXXXX. You may begin your data collection.“
Just a few months late…but thesis is moving. Not fast…but moving nonetheless.
…here we go!!
Emily Pilloton TED talk — amazing. You could replace “Bertie County” for “Hale County” or probably many other communities in the country for that matter.
Interesting article regarding values in business and the state of our future.
Thanks Amanda B. for the link - very interesting perspective…
TED Talk by Ken Robinson about Creativity. Heard this awhile ago, but just re-listened to it today and felt much better about the direction of my thesis.
Sometimes I need to take a mental breather and do something totally new and different - usually this involves taking up some random creative skill: ceramics, knitting, basket-weaving, stained glass, piano, cello, painting, cooking, gardening, crochet, sculpture, or anything else that I can just be messy for a bit and zone out.
A few of these stick around….piano, ceramics, and painting mainly….but, this summer I’ve really taken to cooking.
I started a blog inspired by some of my other friends who were equally fascinated by food. Beth has a blog that is about her eating adventures, Kate has a more detailed cooking blog where she actually looks at recipes, and Gabe is experimenting with some local foods.
SO, probably the only time I will talk about it on THIS blog: I am introducing….
alittlecreativejuice.tumblr.com
a blog about my creative procrastinations…..from THIS blog.
haha.
Paper abstract accepted in the Design Principles conference in Rome, Italy February 2-4th 2011. Looking forward to going to Rome again!!

Abstract Description:
What does social and environmental responsibility mean to designers now? Over the past past two decades, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of socially and environmentally responsible designers and design teams. The work of these people is already having an impact on cultural experiences & artifacts. Their work will have a major impact on social and environmental welfare in the future.
While social responsibility is a growing trend in the design profession, this investigation argues that there should be more of an emphasis placed on social and environmental responsibility integrated within design pedagogy. Not only could this be a focus, but as social responsibility has taken on a variety of definitions and concepts recently, design education could also adapt and change along with the rapidly changing world.
This paper describes research to identify and compare current designers/design teams, current curriculum’s and socially responsible innovators. This research will be used to inform and inspire a set of learning modules that would be developed that would not only integrate social responsibility into the curriculum, but also provide flexibility to change and grow with (or ahead of) our fast-paced world.
